How to Read a Specification Sheet Without Losing the Context

Separate manufacturer claims, measurement conditions and editorial interpretation before comparing products.

Three kinds of information

A manufacturer claim, an independent measurement and a personal impression answer different questions. A useful article labels each one instead of presenting them all as equivalent facts.

Read the conditions beside the number

Check the mode, version and test conditions associated with each figure. When conditions are missing, preserve that limitation in the record. Do not calculate a confident comparison from incompatible figures.

Keep the complete source

Record the exact page address, title, publisher and access date. A link to a brand homepage is useful background, but a specific claim should link to the document that actually supports it.

Use an evidence table

Field What to record
Identity Model, market and version
Claim Exact figure and its context
Method Published conditions or “not provided”
Source Full URL and access date

Avoid the false precision trap

Adding decimal places or a ranking does not repair weak evidence. A clear “unknown” can be more informative than a precise number assembled from incompatible sources.
